An air ambulance was called out yesterday to rescue a woman who had fallen on a cliff top in the South Hams.

The Dartmouth Coastguard Search and Rescue team were called upon to assist Prawle Point Coastguard in rescuing the lady. She had suffered a suspected broken ankle on the footpath above Mattiscombe Beach, near to Start Point.

A spokesman for the Dartmouth Coastguard team said: “Due to the hazardous conditions caused by recent significant rainfall, it was decided that it would be unsafe to attempt the climb up to the carpark.”

So the Devon Air Ambulance was called upon to lift the casualty to an ambulance waiting at the Start Point car park.

The team said: “Well done to everyone involved today.”
