South Hams District Council chairman Cllr Kathy Cuthbert has helped raise nearly £3,000 for a charity that is close to her heart.
Cllr Cuthbert, who represents Ivybridge East at the district council raised more than £2,800 for Epilepsy Action through her charity golf day, held at Bigbury Golf Club.
Teeing off at 9am in a fresh breeze, 30 teams from across the Westcountry took part in the day. Participants included a team of ladies from Woodbury Golf Club called Just here for the View, teams from the China Fleet Club in south east Cornwall including China Dolls and Antique China, teams from Boringdon Golf Club and Ivybridge Rugby Club, and local businesses Wolferstans, Wollen Michelmore, Hicks and Co and David May Motors. One team even travelled from Weston-super-Mare.
The day saw no fewer than eight holes in two, and the sun finally came out for the last few putts. The ladies overall winners were the Four Musketeers and the winning team in the mens were Ivybridge Rugby Club.
Cllr Kathy Cuthbert said: “It was a splendid day. I cannot thank everyone enough for turning up and supporting this charity which is so close to my heart. Some people came a long way to take part, and some not so far, but it really has been a great day and I am delighted that we have raised not just money but awareness for Epilepsy Action.
"Every year the chairman of the council chooses a charity and this year I have chosen Epilepsy Action because I too have epilepsy. However, I think of myself as one of the fortunate ones because I have it totally under control.
“But for some people epilepsy can be totally debilitating, dramatically affecting all aspects of their lives. It is important to me that we continue to raise awareness of the condition so that more people can access the vital services that they need.”
Harvinder Chaggar, fundraising officer at Epilepsy Action, said “We are delighted that Cllr Cuthbert has chosen to support Epilepsy Action. Every penny we receive goes towards our vital work supporting people with epilepsy and their families.”
Cllr Cuthbert added: “The day was fantastic in a beautiful South Hams location, and I’d like to say a big thank you to Bigbury Golf Club for helping to make it a huge success. I am passionate about raising awareness of epilepsy and I am delighted that so many people have come out to support the event.”
