Dee Nutt chairman of Dartmouth Caring explained why the elderly should take care.
She said: “We are currently in the grip of what the Met Office tells us is going to be the coldest weather this winter, and whilst this impacts upon all of us, it is particularly dangerous for the elderly for whom the effects of breathing the colder air and dealing with severe weather can be devastating.
“The older we are the longer it talks our bodies to warm up and this brings with it the risk of a number of very serious and potentially life-threatening issues. Therefore, it is very important that the temperature within the home is at a level which provides adequate warmth.
“It is vital to check the room thermostat (or use a room thermometer) to monitor the level of heat; the ideal temperature is 18C (64F) in the bedroom and 21C (70F) in the living room.
“In addition, we can all play a role in ensuring the elderly and more vulnerable members of our community stay safe and well as the temperature drops. Please take the time to check on those who live close to you whom you know could be at risk; it doesn’t take a lot of effort and could be vital to keeping someone safe this winter.”
