FRED HUGHES, of Winslade Close, Frogmore, writes: It has been said that fences make the best neighbours and this is absolutely true of the proposed elimination/charges/ control of parking at Beesands. The complaint is that, 1) people park on the village green, and 2) that camper-van folk stay overnight and dump there in the morning. Regarding number one: I visited Beesands recently and found the entire green surrounded by two-foot posts, ensuring that NO motorist can encroach on any part. There are small openings of a size to allow pedestrian access at suitable points. Regarding number two: there are already signs prohibiting overnight parking of camper vans. All the district council has to do is enforce it. I realise it may be impractical for cost reasons to send an enforcement officer all the way from Totnes at 11pm to enforce this rule, but surely there must be a resident who could be deputised to do this as a volunteer or for a reasonable stipend? Beesands is a wonderful place and probably unique in Devon. The two commercial businesses depend on folk making their not inconsiderable way there to patronise them in the season so that they can continue to stay open the year round and so help the village remain a viable community. I appeal to the council to leave well enough alone and sometimes to remember that they exist to SERVE the citizens rather constantly making unnecessary attempts to RULE them.
