Cllr Stephen Smith, Dartmouth Town Council, writes:
Your report of the comments made by Cllr Melvyn Stone at our last full Dartmouth Town Council meeting that I also attended are incorrect.
Cllr Stone never stated that a multi-storey car park should be built a the bottom of College Way. He, in fact, said that a two- tier car park could be built in Mayors Avenue.
We are all aware that Coronation Park is hallowed ground in this town and any local politician whp proposed any such scheme knows full well you would need to go into hiding for a very long time at making a suggestion to park on it or dig it up?
Cllr Stone did say that some of the perimeter of the park could be given up for echelon parking, this suggestion has been made many times certainly since I have become a councillor in 2007.
So Cllr Stone has simply confirmed his support for this and not to rip Coronation Park up as implied.
Steve Peacock must agree that Cllr Stone was struggling to hear the questions being asked of him because of his unfortunate hearing impairment.
I am saddened that a certain councicllor latched onto his impairment to make a mockery out of him.
Cllr Stone was simply handed a spade to dig himself a bigger hole to climb out of, so finally just to clarify what was actually said: Cllr Stone did support the latest traffic survey; he did support a two-tier car park in Mayors Avenue; and he did support echelon parking on the parameter of Coronation Park.
