R D LAWRENCE, of Eastergate, Chichester, West Sussex, writes:

I would like to reply to Johnny Chick's words about the Dartmouth Regatta.

I write as one of the regular visitors to Dartmouth – a 'cider-swilling, burger-munching barbarian'.

My grandfather and my mother were both born in Dartmouth and I have visited each year – apart from the war years – with my family.

If Mr Chick was not such a 'newcomer' he would know that the 'cheapjacks' stalls have been there since 1946 and maybe before.

We have seen no trouble from all the 'barbarians' he talks about and, in fact, very little trouble is reported about this event.

There may be one or two incidents similar to that recently published in the Chronicle 'Drunken teens are moved on', included in the reports of the food festival, which Mr Chick speaks of so highly.

All I can say is well done, regatta committee, keep up the good work.

We are already looking forward to next year.
