BARRY VAUGHAN, of Townsend Close, West Alvington, writes: I thought it worthwhile to offer some sort of response to a letter by Dr Paul Andrews (Dartmouth Chronicle, September 19) that proposed adding a tidal barrage across part of the estuary in Kingsbridge for various interesting reasons. He may know, but perhaps not too many readers will remember, that the Chronicle and the Kingsbridge & Salcombe Gazette did run an excellent article on this idea around a decade ago, which included a sketch of a similar proposal. I would say that if the good doctor wishes to proceed with his desire to bring more to Kingsbridge than a twice-daily exposure of smelly mud, then I suggest he knock up some fairly good drawings with accompanying text to explain it and list all the many advantages that such a project would enable. I am near 100 per cent sure that, with the Dartmouth Chronicle and Gazette reflecting such quality and professionalism these days, the editor and staff may well consider the good doctor's estuary etchings, or part of them, worthy of being printed for further consideration by the town. Try as I may, I can't think of anything noteworthy in Kingsbridge that would be a photographic draw for tourists – can you? If so, tell the editor. We haven't even got a scruffy, part-ruined castle like Totnes has (eat your hearts out, Kingsbridgeites), just a mud-filled ruin of a quay and a soulless car park to get lost in. (Volunteers to build an old castle, please.)
