Two South Hams beaches have been named the cleanest in the country.

Slapton Sands and Bigbury-on-sea were placed number one and number two respectively out of a UK wide survey that assessed 222 UK beaches for pollution.

Coming bottom of the list as the most polluted beach in the UK was Pelham Beach in East Sussex.

The study, which calculated the total amount of Co2 emissions in 222 popular seaside spots around the UK, found Slapton Sands and Bigbury-on-Sea Beach to have the lowest pollution levels out of every location analysed.
