Devon’s Atherley Trophy inter-county ladies’ team take on Somerset away at Donyatt on Sunday with Diane Smith (South Hams) and her team-mates looking to go one better than last season writes Tony Atkins.
Last season the team reached the England final but were beaten by Yorkshire.
Smith will play under skip and former English Riviera Open ladies’ outdoor singles champion Carole Binmore, but there is disappointment for Smith’s club-mate Lesley Crutchley, who failed to make the side and is named as reserve.
Harry Goodwin has won another England call-up – this time for the U25 international series at Bristol in February.
After a successful debut with the U18 team in Northern Ireland earlier this season, the former Kingsbridge schoolboy was invited to trial for the U25 team and won a place in the team at the first attempt.
‘It’s great news and I’m in a really good rink,’ said the 18-year-old, who will play at two ahead of Devon team-mate Joe Melmore, from Newton Abbot and behind another Devonian, Ryan Whitlock, with England captain Jamie Walker in place at skip.
Northants county player Walker has been a regular in the U25 team and in 2014 won both the England junior and senior singles titles’.
In the latest round of matches in the DCLIBA Foxlands Trophy, Dartmouth outdoor player Jean Townsend was in the Torbay indoor side that beat Plymouth on all four rinks to gain a maximum of 10 points.
Townsend played alongside Josie Windley, Margaret Griffiths and skip Anita Huxtable in the victory over Aileen Hodsall 18-15.
