ANOTHER season concluded at the South Hams Short Mat Bowls Club with the Knockout Cup final, held at Stoke Fleming Village Hall between Slapton Cygnets and Totnes Creameries Reds.

The match was a tight affair with Slapton Cygnets coming out on top by a very small margin between the teams. Slapton Cygnets had a very good season, also winning the Collyer Teams Trophy and being runners-up in Division One.

Totnes Creameries Milk Churns topped Division One with an overall score of 54 points to the 50 scored by Slapton. The Division Two winners were Strete Short Mat Bowls Club with a total score of 56 points, ahead of South Milton Sanders who posted a score of 46 points.

Overall, it was a very competitive season all-round with several teams being in contention right up until the final weeks of the competition. The season has now ended but the short mat bowlers will continue to play. The new season will begin in October 2025.

MEANWHILE, as the weather warms, the days get longer and we emerge from winter hibernation, it’s time to look at what we can do outdoors.

Stoke Fleming Outdoor Bowling Club has been going since 1919 and whilst you may say some of their members probably have been too, it’s not just a sport for people of a ‘certain age’.

Come along and see for yourself on Saturday, April 19 at 2pm, when the club and green are officially opened for the bowling season.

Club nights are on Tuesday from 6pm, starting on April 22 and the green is also open to the public on Sunday May 25 as part of the Bowls England Big Bowls Weekend. Have a go at bowling and enjoy some light refreshments!

There’ll be club members on hand at all events to welcome and help you. For more information, please contact club secretary Liz Mallyon, on 01803 712799.
