Dartmouth Golf Club men’s section
Another enjoyable day was had by all in the midweek circus writes John Garner.
Playing in the men’s section for the first time in a long time, it was a pleasure to watch Bernard Taylor go about his business.
He’s got one of those swings that very little can go wrong with and his putting is deadly accurate.
His only blemish on the day was that he put his tee shot on 16 in the bunker.
He managed to scramble a point with yet another long putt which meant he finished his round with 38, just one point short on the day, but it was a pleasure to watch a 69-year-old play competently off a handicap of eight.
John Thompson seems to have had his purple patch and has gone back to his usual spraying technique; he did have a unusual incident on the fourth though.
He was on the green for four but three-putted for an eight, he’ll tell you how...
The front nine was won by Bernard Taylor with a very good 21, that’s out in 37, and the back nine was shared by the Mikes, Griffiths and Whitelaw.
If he keeps playing like he is, Mike Griffiths will be able to hold his head high when he tells his mates at the bar that he plays off 12 as he locks into yet another win with 39 points.
There were two twos, by Mark Beal and Paul Dunkerley. The mixed circus on Saturday saw 26 players turn up and all enjoyed a stunning day of wall to wall sunshine with no wind.
Conditions were good for high scoring but oddly enough it didn’t happen.
These days 21 or more is required but Sean Guy, Kevin Matthews and Brian Mushens all shared the front with an unusually low 19.
Eighteen points on the back at Dartmouth is normally a good score but never usually wins anything, but on this occasion it was the winning score and it goes to only one person.
Yep, it’s that farmer again, he’s ploughed his fields and scattered the good seed on his land and now he’s on a semi holiday it’s time to hold his hand out for yet more cash.
Not only did he win the back on his own but to everyone’s delight he also shared a two with Kevin Matthews. He won the competition with 35, well below average, it was only two weeks ago that Ian Metchette won with 44.
The good news for Bob, though, is that it was an unofficial circus so there were no cuts, oh joy of joy for us mere mortals, we can’t wait for next time!
