This year's Dartmouth Regatta marks 10 years of junior rowing successes for Kingswear RC.

Since the junior section was set up, the club has entered at least three juniors crews – and often more, in each of the last 10 Dartmouth Regatta local rowing races.

The teams have competed for the Whaler trophies – the John Lord Trophy for Boys and Kingswear Plate for Girls between 16-18 years, as well as for the Junior Pair oared trophies – the Kingswear Cup for Girls and Raleigh Estates Trophy for Boys between 12-15 years old.

Over the past 10 years Kingswear RC junior crews have had more than 30 girls and boys Dartmouth Regatta wins out of a possibe 40.

Particularly noteworthy is the 100 per cent success in the junior pair oared race for 12-15-year-old girls for the Kingswear Cup, which is usually very competitive with six junior crews entered this year.

The John Lord Trophy for 16-18-year-old boys has an especially famous name on it – Bill Lucas, an under 23 world champion and London Olympic sculling finalist from Kingswear, who started his rowing on the Dart, appears twice on this trophy, whilst he was rowing for the Kingswear club.

Also appearing is then 16-year-old Fraser Dyer, who went on to become the men's champion of the Dart. The entries for this race, the Youth Whaler Race, has been very disappointing, with only two crews – both from Kingswear RC, entered in 2012 and the same this year.

Hopefully next year, Dartmouth can produce some great crews too, otherwise there is a real risk the race will be lost from the programme, which would be a shame for the future of local rowing.

If you would like to row with Kingswear RC or help out junior programme by becoming a trained coxswain, take a look at the club website for more information at http://www.kings">www.kings

In the meantime, give all of the junior rowers a big cheer when they race at 1:40pm and 3:20pm on Friday, August 30.
