Dart gig club were at their favourite event, Rame at Cawsand, last Saturday, along with 26 other clubs. The event is always popular, ensuring good competition. The course was the usual kite shape, comprising three buoy turns, with the second mark being particularly sharp, despite having been told by the organisers that all three turns could be rowed around. With so many clubs in attendance the races were divided alphabecially into two heats. This put Dart into the first heat. The races were timed so the results of the two heats could be amalgamated. Dart's six men rowed in the first heat of the men's B, which put them in with many of the top crews. They rowed a strong first leg before losing some ground during the rest of the race. They still came in ahead of three crews. A number of boats in the second heat were slower than Dart and this gave the crew a final position of joint 12th out of 17. The ladies' A had an excellent start and pulled away to second place, which they maintained until the second mark, where a place was lost. However, they rowed home strongly to come in third. Combined results put them ninth out of 24. The ladies' B also had a good start. They were rather upset that Lark were not disqualified, having been a good boat length up on the start. However, that's gig racing... Dart fought all the way round to maintain their second place and their combined result was fifth out of 20. Dart's men's vets were joined by Stuart from Salcombe. There were no heats in this race and they came ninth out of 13. There were also no heats in the ladies' vets. They had a great race, coming in first place up to the last mark. Unfortunately Caradon passed them on the final straight, followed by Mounts Bay and Portland, but this still put them in a creditable fourth place out of 15. Ladies' squad: Alison Bland, Lucy Swash, Ella Chivers, Chloe Gardner, Carol Squire, Kate Cooke, Peta Chivers, Clare Thorp, Katharine Money, Bonnie Chivers, Maggie Russell, Hilary Bussell. Men's squad: Paul Kunert, Rupert Kempley, Tony Doidge, Will Atkins, Stan Bray, Michael Bryant-Mole.
