HEARN Field, the location of the first of the frost-bite regattas in 2025 for Dart Gig Club can be an unholy, bleak and melancholy spot in January.
However, a collection of local rowing clubs Yealm, Salcombe, Paignton and Brixham, as well as the hosts, brought life and activity to the rain-sodden fields. The river itself swirled a dull murky brown but for a few hours, it provided a scene for compelling, if chilly, entertainment.
The juniors launched the regatta for Dart in that trusty water-horse “Lightning,” pushing off from the muddy banks, they rowed to the start 1500 metres downriver. From the starter's cry of “Go” it was clear the brackish Teign had some dirty tricks up its sleeve, though seeming flat and benevolent it was obvious the northern side of the flow was absurdly favourable to whoever had that water.
Consequently, Yealm took an other-worldly lead in the race and held it to finish ten lengths ahead. The excitement in the true race was mid-pack, Dart approached the finishing straight at a decent clip but were unfortunately near the back only to battle back and cross the line a credible third, getting the first points on the board.
Dart dominated last year’s Open A series but with some personnel changes since then, came a close second to the new dark horse on the scene, Yealm.
The Open B followed and was fortunately won by a length, restoring Dart to the top of the table, the C crew in the ensuing race came in second keeping a strong momentum going for the overall regatta win.
It was in the women’s races that Dart pulled away in an authoritative fashion. The A, B and C crews recorded second, first and first respectively cementing, total victory.
Teign were excellent hosts and set up a delightful event.
